SPECIAL REPORT
Special Report: France's Insurance Market Rebounds Despite Ongoing Economic Weakness

The French insurance sector has rebounded despite a difficult market environment and historically low interest rates that continue to squeeze investment returns. After a period of consolidation and ongoing contraction, gross premium written (GPW) increased 3.7% in 2013 to EUR 188.2 billion, up from EUR 181.4 billion in 2012, according to data from the Fédération Française des Sociétés d’Assurances (FFSA). This was driven by increases in life and savings premiums, as well as by the accident and health sector. Life and savings rose 4.8% to EUR 118.7 billion, after two consecutive years of decline (minus 9.0% in 2012 and minus 14.0% in 2011), while accident and health registered a 2.5% increase in premiums to EUR 19.2 billion.
