Equitas, the reinsurer established to handle pre-1993 nonlife liabilities at Lloyd's, has won what appears to be a major legal victory in the United Kingdom regarding long-stalled reinsurance claims over the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill and Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
In deciding that Equitas was entitled to apply actuarial models to claims arising from the two events, the English Commercial Court found against Randall & Quilter Investment Holdings plc, parent company of reinsurer R&Q Re (UK).
