A.M. BestTV: Re Plane! Swiss Re Backs a Round-The-World Solar Powered Flight

The reinsurer says the experimental project highlights issues of risk, innovation and sustainability.

“Solar Impulse 2 is a very exciting project. It is trying to make history by being the first plane to circle the world powered only by the sun,” said Rudi Flunger, head of regions & specialty, Swiss Re. “Swiss Re is the sole insurer of the plane, pilot and third party. The plane is valued at CHF$12.5 million.”

The airplane has a wing span of a 747, but is as light as a family car, with the power of a small motorcycle. The airplane successfully flew from Japan to Hawaii in five days and will resume its around-the-world trip in spring 2016.
