OLDWICK - JUNE 21, 2016 11:05 AM (EDT)
In this A.M.BestTV episode from the annual Bermuda Captive Conference in Bermuda, organizers of insurance programs said forming insurance captives in less-developed areas of Africa, Central America and the Caribbean is a key element to their operations. On the final day of the conference, executives spoke about top issues impacting captives, such as cyber risks and expansion into new geographies, including Canada and Latin America. However, one emerging issue is using captives in a public-private partnership to close the gap between uninsured and insured risks.

“Since we are in a very competitive market right now, it is a good opportunity right now, I think, for many governments to help fund that gap between what the insurance sector covers and what their potential liability is from an economic loss perspective,” said Bryan Fuller, managing director, Extremis Global Risk Counseling.

Fred Eslami, senior financial analyst, A.M. Best, believes the conference was very comprehensive and will benefit all participants.

“This conference touched upon almost every aspect of the industry from investment, including long-term disability and medical into captives, as well as cyber into captives. It was a comprehensive session,” said Eslami.

Other people who appear in this episode include:

  • Jill Husbands, chair, Marsh Bermuda;

  • Kim Willey, senior counsel, ASW Law; and

  • David Gibbons, chairman, Bermuda Captive Conference.
