Michael Foley, chief executive officer at Zurich North America (Zurich) spoke about the lessons his company has learned. "I believe access to international capital is a key part of mitigating and spreading the risks from wind-exposed property across the United States," said Foley. "Zurich also learned from Katrina that if we approach the matter by using an alternative dispute resolution policy, where we work with third-party mediators with no affiliation to Zurich, claims are settled quicker and fairly."

Kevin Kelley, chief executive officer at Ironshore, Inc., learned how important insurance is to customers that are desperate for assistance. "I have learned that insurance plays a very significant role in a post-Katrina situation. It is the first responder to the liquidity needs that customers have."

Other people who appear in this episode include:

  • Jim Donelon, insurance commissioner of Louisiana.
