BISMARCK, N.D. //BestWire// - North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread will announce plans for his 2020 re-election campaign Oct. 16.

According to the North Dakota Republican Party’s website, Godfread will make it official in an announcement in the state capital, Bismarck.

Godfread was first elected in 2016 after winning handily in a three-candidate race for commissioner, taking over the seat held by Adam Hamm. Prior to the election, Godfread told Best’s News Service if elected, he would change state law and “change the mindset of the department of being open for business” (Best’s News Service, Nov. 9, 2016).

He worked for the passage of a waiver of Affordable Care Act regulations to permit the creation of a reinsurance program for the individual market, which has helped lower rates (Best’s News Service, Aug. 15, 2019). Godfread’s office also expanded the length of short-term, limited-duration health plans from 185 days to 365 days.

Godfread leads a National Association of Insurance Commissioners Innovation and Technology Task Force that is looking into developing a new model law to address anti-rebating issues that are reportedly hindering business development across the states.

Before becoming commissioner, Godfread was the vice president of government affairs for the North Dakota Chamber of Commerce.
