This A.M. BestTV episode looks at FM Global’s Research Campus, where its engineers ignite explosions, fire lumber cannons and shake offices every day in an effort to prevent the leading causes of property loss. Click on http://www.ambest.com/v.asp?v=catlab117 to view the entire program.

“FM Global’s common philosophy, which we share with our clients, is that the majority of loss is preventable,” said Tom Lawson, chief executive officer, FM Global. “FM Global looks at loss as something that can be prevented, as opposed to a forgone conclusion.”

The center, which is located in Rhode Island, is a controlled location where experiments involving fire, explosion, hurricane-force winds and vibrations matching earthquake intensity can be conducted. Lawson also spoke about the uniqueness of FM Global. “It’s not just research for research sake,” said Lawson. “It is research that we can apply to help our clients become more resilient and more resistant to loss.” Lawson added that the company does not employ actuaries. “That’s because we think you can prevent loss by identifying it, helping to assess it, and then, most importantly, helping to prevent it,” said Lawson.
